So, I’ve made the decision to be as much of a traditional homesteading partner as I can. This transition can feel daunting for some and a blessing for others—personally, I’m somewhere in between. I love staying at home, working in the garden, creating, and caring for my loved ones. At the same time, I still feel the need to contribute financially.
I’ve tried in the past to turn my hobbies into a business. People often told me how great my products were—but truthfully, I’m terrible at sales. So instead of putting pressure on myself, I’ve decided to let those passions remain hobbies I love, while still offering my items in the store here for anyone who connects with them. On top of that, I do things like Door Dash to help bring in some extra income.
Now, the real question: where do I start in this journey?
If you’re anything like me, your house is cluttered, you’ve got family and animals depending on you, and you’re often overwhelmed. But somehow, you still find time to watch other people do it on YouTube, so you’ve picked up some knowledge—you just don’t know where to begin.
Here’s the truth: you start where you are, with what you have. If you’re still unsure, just follow along with me. Together, we’ll figure it out and make a difference.
I’m starting today, because there’s no better day than today. But I also know I can’t do everything at once, so I’ve chosen a few key things to focus on first:
List the members of my household, including health issues and food preferences.
Start a master shopping list.
Begin a weekly menu plan.
Declutter my bedroom.
You might be wondering how these steps help. Let me explain:
Listing household members & their needs
This becomes the foundation of your homestead. Every choice—from food to routines—will be built around the people you live with.Starting a master shopping list
Write down every product and food item your household regularly uses. This will highlight where small changes can be made and what you truly need to stock up on consistently.Creating a menu plan
Plan out breakfast, lunch, and dinner for seven days, keeping likes, dislikes, and health needs in mind. This not only helps with shopping but also lays the foundation for building a prepper pantry.Decluttering the bedroom
Notice I didn’t say “the whole house.” That’s intentional. I get overwhelmed when I try to tackle too much. By starting with my room—the first thing I see every morning—I can set the tone for my entire day.
Finally, don’t try to spend all day on these tasks. For the first three, grab a coffee (or your drink of choice) and just jot down quick notes. Remember, these lists and plans will evolve over time. As for decluttering, set a timer and give yourself a manageable chunk of time. Progress is better than perfection.
Follow along with me as I share my wins (and mistakes) on this homesteading journey. Let’s grow together.
